Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental condition that affects the way the individual relates to their environment and their interaction with other people. The main difficulties include social communication, social interaction and restricted and repetitive behaviours and interests and some intellectually impaired or may have learning difficulties (Autism Spectrum Australia, 2016). Autism is a diagnostic evaluation involving doctors, pediatrician, psychologist, speech and language pathologist and occupational therapist; it is diagnosed through autism-specific behavioural evaluations (Autism Speaks, 2016).
This digital portfolio provides and insight into a year one student that was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at the age of one. For the purpose of this portfolio a pseudonym name was used to identify the student as it makes the portfolio more realistic and is based upon a student that I have previously worked with whilst I was a teacher aid at a Primary Catholic School.
There are identified issues that focus on the student ‘Mike’ with ASD and the impact it has with fellow students and educators and focusing on intervention and strategies that can be trialed.
