My Learning Experience
My engagement with the task has been fulfilling and interesting, through exploring a student and the needs of students with ASD is spectacular. It is amazing to see how students with ASD differ from one another. So far throughout my time in the education system I have not found two students with ASD that have the same characteristics, every student are different and their needs are different. I have seen a student in year two with competent socialization skills you would not identify that the student has ASD at most time but then on the other hand I have experienced a student in year five with ASD and there socialization skills is something that is being built upon each day as the student feels really uncomfortable with social interaction as identified as a characteristic according to Autism Spectrum Australia (2016).
My growth as a preservice teacher is growing each and every day. Through the course material especially in regards to course reading it gives you an insight into other point of views and a different prospective that other educators and have and they are insights that I have not ever thought of and are worth a thought. Through professional experience alone and actually being in the classroom and experiences it first hand is the best experiences, you can read about it and be prepared before entering the classroom but the hands on experience you endure whilst on professional experience is potentially life changing, it makes you think I want to do this and I can do this and you look at every aspect in the classroom to accommodate for the student if they don’t like something you instantly think ‘okay what can I do to make it better or to change it so they do like the way of doing something’.
My strengths I believe is interacting with the students is adequate and the students take to me well, I am open minded and am always up to do what it takes to assist the student throughout giving them the best potential opportunity at school and according to the Australian Professional Teacher standards ‘1.1 Physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students’ it is finding the best teaching strategy based on the knowledge of students’ physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics to improve the students learning. I have found that not all students are going to learn the same way we all learn differently and we as educator need to find what works for any student to ensure we teach the way they learn and sometimes it take thinking outside of the box to accompanist this and it may not always work the first time but in accordance to the Professional standard 1.5 differentiate teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities, this is me as an educator developing the teaching activity that incorporates differentiated strategies to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities.
Overall subject SPE3002 Autism Spectrum Disorder has influenced my learning and educating, I have learnt new learning techniques and so much in regards to ASD. My weakness is finding the ability to get all y ideas out and making sense of them and trying to fully explain the idea that I have in my head, in future I need to fully think these ideas through and ensure I know and understand them before I enforce these idea in the classroom.
